Other valve designs require either three 2-way valves, two 3-way valves, or a 3-way valve and check valve to accommodate water heater bypass.

Anderson 4-Way Bypass

Anderson's 4-way rotary ball valve design bypasses the water heater in one position and passes cold water to the heater and hot water out in the second position.
